Sandy's historic core has a documented concentration of older brick houses and commercial buildings. We repair, repoint and build masonry throughout Sandy, from the historic district to newer neighborhoods.
The Sandy Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2007. Its boundaries run generally along State Street, 9000 South, 700 East and Pioneer Avenue (National Register record).
The district nomination documents brick houses and commercial buildings from several periods, including Victorian, bungalow and World War II to postwar construction. Those findings describe the district, not all of Sandy.
Working on older brick
Older brick usually calls for a mortar that is no harder or less permeable than the brick (NPS Preservation Brief 2), and gentle cleaning instead of sandblasting or high pressure washing (Preservation Brief 6). Our restoration page explains why.
Permits in Sandy
Sandy's Build page is the city's starting point for building permits, inspections and city codes. We were not able to verify a published retaining wall threshold for Sandy, so confirm requirements for your property there before planning a wall.
National Register listing is different from local designation, which is what usually triggers design review. Check with Sandy before major exterior changes.
