West Jordan separates building permits from excavation and engineering review. We repair and build masonry across the city and can help you figure out which office a project goes through.
West Jordan's Building & Safety division handles plan checks, permits and inspections, and the city lists a separate contact for excavation, land disturbance and engineering (Building & Safety). A retaining wall with significant grading may involve both.
Fences are not retaining walls
The city's Planning & Zoning page says fences do not need a building permit when they meet the city's height rules (Planning & Zoning). That is a fence rule. A wall that holds back soil is a different structure with its own requirements, so do not assume the fence exemption covers it.
New brick and stone on West Jordan homes
For new garden walls, columns and mailboxes, the details that decide how they age are the footing, a cap that sheds water, and brick rated for severe weathering. Our brick masonry page explains each.
The city says fences that meet its height rules do not need a building permit (Planning & Zoning). Confirm with the city that your masonry fence design falls under that rule.
