Pleasant Grove has a historic district laid out on the streets of its original 1853 fort, and a local tradition of building with a stone known as soft rock.
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's Preserve America profile places Pleasant Grove's historic district within the streets that defined the original 1853 fort. It describes a local building tradition using a porous stone called soft rock, which hardens on exposure to air, and notes Old Bell School, built in 1864, now a local museum (Preserve America profile).
That describes historic buildings, not modern homes. But if you own an older building with soft rock masonry, repairs need extra care: porous stone is easily damaged by hard mortar and abrasive cleaning (NPS Preservation Brief 2, Brief 6).
We can assess it and tell you whether it calls for standard repair or specialist conservation. Hard mortar and abrasive cleaning should be avoided either way.
